Day, Night and Seasons

Why are June days so long and December days so short? Drag Earth around the Sun, pick your city, and watch the day length, the noon Sun and your shadow change. Then try switching the seasons off!

What's happening

Rotation makes day and night

Earth spins on its axis once every 24 hours, from west to east. The half facing the Sun has day and the other half has night. Because we spin toward the east, the Sun seems to rise in the east and set in the west.

1 rotation ≈ 24 hours (one day)

Revolution + tilt make the seasons

Earth goes round the Sun once a year, with its axis tilted 23.4° and always pointing the same way, toward the Pole Star. Around June the northern half leans toward the Sun, so India gets long days and a high noon Sun. Around December it leans away, so days are short and the Sun stays low.

1 revolution ≈ 365¼ days · tilt = 23.4°

It's the angle, not the distance

When the Sun is high, its light falls straight down and is concentrated on a small patch of ground, so it heats more. When the Sun is low, the same light spreads over more ground. Earth is actually closest to the Sun in January, in the middle of India's winter!

same sunlight spread over 1 ÷ sin(Sun's height) as much ground

Who figured this out?

Aryabhata

499 CE, India

Taught that Earth spins on its own axis, which makes the stars seem to move across the sky and gives us day and night, about a thousand years before Copernicus.

Eratosthenes

About 240 BCE, Egypt

On the longest day, the noon Sun was straight overhead at Syene but cast a small shadow in Alexandria. From that angle he worked out the size of Earth surprisingly well.

Nicolaus Copernicus

1543, Poland

Argued that Earth goes round the Sun once a year, instead of the Sun going round Earth.

Common questions

Why do seasons occur?

Seasons happen because Earth's axis is tilted by about 23.4° while it goes round the Sun. For part of the year the northern half leans toward the Sun and gets long days and a high Sun (summer); six months later it leans away (winter). They are not caused by Earth's distance from the Sun.

What is the difference between rotation and revolution of the Earth?

Rotation is Earth spinning on its own axis, once every 24 hours, which causes day and night. Revolution is Earth moving round the Sun, once every 365¼ days, which together with the tilt of the axis causes the seasons and gives us a year.

What is the tilt of Earth's axis?

Earth's axis is tilted about 23.4° (often written 23.5° or 23½°) from upright, compared with its path round the Sun. It always points toward the Pole Star, which is why the Pole Star stays still in the sky.

Why is 21 June the longest day in India?

On or near 21 June, the June solstice, the northern half of Earth is tilted most toward the Sun. The noon Sun is at its highest and every place north of the Equator, including all of India, gets its longest day. The shortest day is near 22 December.

What is Zero Shadow Day?

Zero Shadow Day is when the Sun is exactly overhead at noon, so upright objects cast almost no shadow. It happens twice a year at places between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. In Chennai and Bengaluru it falls around 24 April and 18 August, and in Mumbai around 15 May and 27 July.

Why is it summer in Australia when it's winter in India?

When Earth's northern half is tilted toward the Sun, the southern half is tilted away. So in December, while India has short winter days, Australia has long summer days, and the other way round in June.

Not to scale. Times are local Sun time (noon = Sun highest), so they differ from IST by up to about an hour across India. Real days are a few minutes longer because the air bends sunlight over the horizon.
